Circle 13: Intellectual Struggle and Political Action Undertaken by the Companions (ra)
In this Circle, we will talk about the intellectual struggle and political actions undertaken by the Prophet’s (saw) companions (ra).
The companions’ (ra) resolve in facing everything prohibited by Islam and confronting them to expose their fallacy was strong and uncompromised. They never considered anything or situation in their abiding to the Islamic ideology alone. Relying to Allah on it, and believing that victory will come from him, with a strong conviction on Him…!
And to prove that, we will mention a behavior and highlight a stance among ideological stances that the Prophet’s (saw) companions (ra) stood by them while deeply rooted in the intellectual struggles and political actions…!
This stance is just an example rather than mentioning all stances of the companions (ra), as their ideological stances are numerous and cannot be memorized, neither do they fit to be listed in this platform, listing them requires volumes of books…!
The Stand of the Noble Companion Uthman ibn Madh’un in persevering hardship and nuisance in way of Allah:
Reported by Abu Nuaym in Hulya from Uthman he said: When he saw what befell the Prophet’s (saw) companions (ra) of tribulations while he was under the protection of Walid bin Mughera, he said: “By Allah I walk freely under the protection of a polytheist, while my colleagues in my religion face tribulations and nuisance in the way of Allah, it is a great weakness in my soul! He went to Walid bin Mughera and said to him: “Oh Aba Abdi Shams! You have exercised your mandate, and I have returned back your protection!” he said: “Why is it so oh son of my brother?! Could it be that a man from my people has annoyed you?” he said: “No, but I prefer the protection of Allah azza wa jalla, rather than the protection of anyone else…! He said: “Let’s go to the mosque, and uplift your protection openly from me the same way I openly asked it from you.” He said: They left and when they arrived at the mosque, Walid bin Mughera said: “Here is Uthman, he came to return back my protection, Uthman (ra) said: “He has spoken the truth, I prefer to have no protection except that of Allah, I have returned back his protection!”
Then Uthman (ra) left, and Labid bin Rabi’ah the poet, was among the gathering of Quraysh and was singing for them. Uthman sat with them, Labid said: “Know that everything worshipped other than Allah is falsehood”. Uthman said: “You have spoken the truth”. Labid said: “And every bounty will vanish” Uthman said: “You have lied indeed people’s bounty; the Paradise will stay”. Labid bin Rabia’ah said: “Oh the gathering of Quraysh, By Allah your gathering was free from nuisance! When did this arise?” Someone from the gathering said: “This is a fool and his colleagues are also fools, who left our religion, don’t be bothered with his words”. Uthman spoke back at him until it turned into a fierce conversation. The man stood and slapped at Uthman until his eyes turned red from the strong slap. And Walid bin Mughera was near looking at what was befalling to Uthman. Walid said: “And by Allah Oh son of my brother! Your eye was under protection from what has just befallen it, you were under a good protection”, Uthman said: “Rather by Allah! Indeed, my other healthy eye needs what has befallen the other! And I am under the protection of Allah the Most powerful and the Most Abled, Oh Aba Abdi Shams!” Then Walid said: “Come back to your protection Oh son of my brother”, He replied: “No”.
And Uthman ibn Madh’un (ra) was a poet, he spoke of what befell his eye:
Allah is pleased with my eye attacked by the hand,
Of he who fights the religion who is astray,
Rahman has compensated me with rewards,
And he whom Allah is pleased with Oh my people will cherish,
Even when you call me a stray fool inside the Prophet’s (saw) religion,
I need Allah for that and the truth is our religion,
Against he who transgresses and harm us,
It will continue in UQAB Issue 18… In Shaa Allah.
