Sixty Years of Agony and Anarchy

 Press Release

Kenya marked 60 years of ‘independence’ on Tuesday, 12th December 2023. The day is observed annually on December 12, marking the day in 1963 when Kenya gained its so-called independence from British colonial rule.

We in Hizb ut Tahrir in Kenya wish to highlight the following:

The term “independence,” after World War II, came to signify “liberation” from colonialism. In reality, this is its superficial meaning only. The truth is that the owner of this matter is the US, which invented it to create an opportunity to strip the colonies from other colonizers. The reality of political leadership in the country since pseudo independence of Kenya from the British, has been the true beneficiary of the hand over as they are the landlords of chunks of lands leaving the general population as squatters.

The seeds of failures and decline in the country were implanted by colonialists who magnified differences amongst the various communities and tribes, instigating clashes whereby each community distrusted and fought the other. The local political leaders sacrifice for political, economic, and social interests to be secured via regional and tribal bargaining powers which serve as tools for political gains and achievements. The restoration of multi-party Democracy deemed as new liberation has put the country into more ethnic divisions and hatred as the political class is used to hijack the public inspirations in setting agendas that seek to give the delusional hope. The promulgation of the new 2010 constitution that came up with a newly devolved system of governance has not saved citizenry from problems.

What makes Kenya fail to solve basic problems of the public is because of relying on a colonialist Capitalist ideology which is based on the human mind and not on Revelation from Allah (swt). With the implementation by successive regimes, the vicious imperial – colonial policies continue harming Kenya. It is through trade deals with Western major powers like UK and US that have left Kenya and Africa at large devastated with crippling rates of poverty, hunger and disease.

In order to achieve true independence, we need an ideology that will change society drastically which is none other than Islam. In reality, with profound the Islamic ideology, sixty years is ample time to achieve great success. Greater achievements were achieved within a short span of time by the true leaders who implemented Islam through an independent state of the Khilafah. As an example, the Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz (ra) was able to create a society without poverty in just two years and five months. Henceforth, true independence can only be gained through the total implementation of Islam in all aspects of life under the umbrella of the Khilafah (Caliphate) State to be re-established in one of the Muslim countries.
