Circle 9: Abdullahi Ibnu Masoud and Mus’ab Ibnu Umair’s Endurance of the Hardship and Nuisance in the Face of the Da’wah

In this haaqah we conclude the fourth and last tactic used by the Quraysh against the Prophet’s (saw) da’wah. And today we will talk about nuisance and persecution that faced some of the Companions (ra).

The First to Declare Islam

Zubeyr ibn Awwam (ra) narrated that: The first to declare Islam after the Prophet (saw) in Mecca was Abdullah ibn Masoud (ra), when the Companions gathered they said: The Quraysh have never heard the Qur’an read openly. Who will make them hear it? Abdullah ibn Masoud said: I. They told him: We fear for you; we want someone who has kinship that would protect him from them should they intend to harm him… he replied: leave it to me Allah will protect me…! The following morning Ibn Masoud went to the Maqam during dhuha/morning time while the Quraysh were going on with their businesses and read this verse at the top of his voice:

الرحمن علم القرآن

The Most Merciful, He taught the Qur’an.

[Ar-Rahmaan: 2]

Then he faced towards them while reciting, they listened keenly while asking: what is this son of a slave woman saying…? Indeed, he is reciting from some of what Muhammad came with… they stood up and hit him on his face while he carried on reciting until he reached where Allah wanted him to reach…

He then returned to his fellow Companions (ra) with an injured face and body, to which they told him: This is what we were fearing for you…! He replied: The enemies of Allah have never been so humiliated to me than now, and if you want tomorrow, I will return to them…! They told him: no, that was enough since you have made them hear what they detest…!

The First Ambassador of Islam

Mus’ab ibn Umayr, is one of those who were taught manners by Islam, and cultured by Muhammad (saw). Indeed, his life has full of honour to humankind…!

He heard that the Prophet (saw) and his followers were gathering in the house of Arqam ibn Abi Al-Arqam, and went there with love; within a blink of an eye, he embraced Islam while hiding it from his mother…!

He was once seen sneaking into the house of Arqam by Uthman ibn Twalha and then saw him the second time praying like Muhammad (saw) upon which he rushed to report him to his mother. His mother immediately expressed his anger towards him for abandoning their gods.

Mus’ab stood in front of his mother and relatives and in front of the Quraysh chiefs who gathered and read the Qur’an to them with certainty and conviction which Muhammad (saw) washed with them their hearts and fill them with wisdom and strength, honour and justice and piety…!

Before his Islam Mus’ab was a youth known for bounties, born in bounties and brought up in bounties, and he was this way throughout his youthful life. When her mother despaired of his abandoning Islam she denied him everything she used to provide for him, she refused him to eat her food as long as he deserted their gods, she cursed him even though he was her son…!

Notwithstanding this, his mother further locked him inside a room, until when some of the believers migrated to Abyssinia he decided to break through and passed his mother’s guards and went to Abyssinia…!

Mus’ab resolved to change his life and adopt the new one whose guidance he got from Muhammad (saw). He once came out while the Companions (ra) were gathered around the Prophet (saw), when they saw him they dropped down their heads and closed their eyes while some broke into tears that was because they saw him in a gown full of patches and recalled how his lifestyle before his Islam, where he used to have beautiful of clothing, wonderful garden and strong perfumes…!

When he (saw) saw him he said: “I saw this Mus’ab, and there was no youth in Makkah who was full of bounties from his parents than him, but he left all that willingly for the love of Allah and His Messenger…!

Then the Prophet (saw) appointed him for a crucial task…! He appointed him to be an ambassador in Madinah, culturing the Ansar who gave a pledge in Aqabah and to invite others to the religion, and prepare Medina for the day of great Hijrah.

Mus’ab ibn Umayr succeeded greatly in this! He went to Medina the day sent by the Messenger (saw) while there were only 12 Muslims he stayed with them for a couple of months until the people of Madinah accepted the call of Allah and His Messenger (saw), no house was left except that Islam was being mentioned inside of it…!

And during the season of Hajj following the pledge of Aqabah Madinah Muslims used to send an envoy to represent them for Hajj… and the number of representatives sent were seventy men and one woman (71) who attended for Hajj rituals, while asking themselves: ” Till when will we leave the Prophet (saw) being chased away to the mountains of Makkah in fear…?

When they arrived in Makkah there occurred a secret communication between them and the Prophet (saw) that gave birth to the second pledge of Aqabah which was known as the Pledge of War. That was before the establishment of the Islamic state.

After establishment of the Islamic State under the Leadership of Prophet Muhammad (saw), Mus’ab (ra) carried the Rayah on the day of Uhud, when Muslims were overwhelmed he remained in the battlefield, ibn Qumaiah followed him and chopped off his right hand, he held the Rayah by his left hand which was also chopped off and he held it in between the chopped hands and his chest…! On the third time he attacked him with a spear and he dropped dead while his soul departing to the eternal Jannah, as a Martyr…!

After the battle was over, the Prophet (saw) and the Companions (ra) went to see the martyrs and when they reached Mus’ab’s (ra) body they cried profusely…! When they wanted to shroud him they could not find anything to shroud except a small piece of cloth which when they covered his head his feet are left open and when they covered his feet his head is left open…! The Prophet (saw) said: “Put it on his head and cover his feet with leaves…!”

Then he (saw) stared at the shroud and said: “Indeed I saw you in Makkah and there was no one with beautiful clothes than yours, and strong perfume than yours. Here you are today with uncombed hair inside the shroud”.

It will continue in UQAB Issue 14… In Shaa Allah.
